Spotlight on Summer Camps: Camp Susque

Enroll Your Child TODAY!

By Nicole Hickoff-Publisher Macaroni KID Williamsport April 30, 2024

Camp Susque offers three different options for summer camp: Young Explorers Camp, Boys Camp, and Girls Camp. They also offer Wilderness Trips for campers entering grades 6th-12th.

For each of Camp Susque's youth camps, your child will join a cabin/tent group made up of one counselor and 6-8 other campers in their same age group. This provides them with the security and context of a small group in which they can bond, share, and explore. Many of the campers return time after time just to experience this small group, community feel. They state it frees them to feel safe enough to be themselves, to grow and try new things, and to open up about what is going on in their lives with others their same age.

Young Explorers is a way for your child to get his/her feet wet with the camping experience. It runs for just 4 days and 3 nights and is tailored to make your child’s first camp experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Typically, this camp is staffed by "mom" and "dad" age counselors to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Their Boys and Girls camps are unique in that they allow boys to be boys and girls to be girls in the context of a week of summer camp. They provide a chance for your child to spend the week at camp not distracted by or worrying about getting embarrassed in front of campers of the opposite gender. These camps are served by well-screened, college-age counselors who spend two weeks in training learning how to best take care of your child while at Susque.

YOUNG EXPLORERS (grades 1-3)

Young Explorers, formerly called Adventure Camp, is a way for your child to get his/her feet wet with the camping experience. It runs for just 4 days and 3 nights and is tailored to make your child’s first camp experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Boys Young Explorers ~ Underwater Adventure | June 16-June 19 (Sunday-Wednesday)

Girls Young Explorers ~ Underwater Adventure  | June 19-June 22 (Wednesday-Saturday)

BOYS Camp (grades 3-11)

For over 65 years, Boys Camp has been a place for boys to be boys. Here they are free to make new friends, try new experiences, and live without the distractions of everyday life or a co-ed setting. Each week, Littlemen (grades 3-5), Redmen (grades 6-8), and Woodsmen (grades 9-11) can try their hand at skill-based activities such as dagorhir, archery, kayaking, and outdoor survival. Other small and large group activities such as gaga, campouts, and special theme activities add social stimulation and creative, fun elements.

Most importantly, boys will be immersed in a safe, loving community of leaders and young adults who have a passion for them to both hear and see the Gospel of Christ lived out. Each day, campers will hear from and interact with a chaplain, chosen for his ability to work with youth and encourage the hearts of young men. Well-screened, trained, college-age counselors also participate in the learning process as they guide their small cabin or tent group of 6-8 boys into the deeper truths of living in community and sensing God's purpose in their lives.

There are three weeks of Boys Camp.  Each week is a different theme!  There is Susque Seafarers Week, Polar Expedition Week and Space Week.

Girls Camp (grades 3-11)

For over 40 years, Girls Camp has provided a fun-filled, supportive atmosphere where girls can be themselves. Here they can withdraw from the distractions of everyday life and co-ed settings. Each week, close bonds form as Jays (grades 3-5), Doves (grades 6-8), and Hawks (grades 9-11) try their hand at skill-based activities such as canoeing, dance, pottery, and archery. Other small and large group activities such as gaga, campouts, and special theme activities add a chance to mingle and enjoy creative, fun elements.

Most importantly, girls will be immersed in a safe, loving community of leaders and young adults who have a passion for them to both hear and see the Gospel of Christ lived out. Each day, campers will hear from and interact with a chaplain and sometimes his wife, chosen for their ability to work with youth and encourage the hearts of young women. Well-screened, trained, college-age counselors also participate in the learning process as they guide their small cabin or tent group of 6-8 girls into the deeper truths of living in community and sensing God's purpose in their lives.

There are three weeks of Girls Camp.  Each week is a different theme!  There is Space Week, Polar Expedition, and Susque Seafarers Week.

Wilderness Trips

Camp Susque’s Wilderness Adventure Trips take the classic Susque experience to a whole new level! Climbing mountains, paddling lakes and rivers, and sleeping under the stars is just the beginning!

Wilderness Trips are co-ed and led by stringently screened and trained co-ed leaders with a leader-to-camper ratio of 1:4. This enables close relationships to form as leaders guide and mentor the campers in all aspects of the trip, from canoeing strokes to preparing for chapel. Sleeping under the stars, conquering challenges, and cooking your own meals often quickly creates a sense of community that few campers have felt before. Many of our Wilderness Trip campers return to do Wilderness Trips again and again because they find the spiritual growth and community so rare.

Your teen is sure to be challenged and have a fun time on one of these Wilderness Trips.  There are four Wilderness Trips to choose from based on your teens age.

WEST RIM EXCURSION | June 19 - June 22

The West Rim Excursion (for Boys & Girls Entering Grades 6-8) is geared right towards middle-school-age campers. It takes place about an hour away in the stunning Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. This four-day, three-night trip is led by experienced Susque staff members trained specifically in leading Wilderness Trips.

DELAWARE RIVER RUN | August 7- August 10

The Delaware River Run (for Boys & Girls Entering Grades 6-8) is our second trip geared right towards middle-school-age campers. It takes place about two hours away in the scenic Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area. This four-day, three-night trip is led by experienced Susque staff members trained specifically in leading Wilderness Trips.

OPERATION OHIOPYLE | June 29 - July 6

Operation Ohipyle (for Boys & Girls Entering Grades 9-12) is an exciting week of varied activities including rappelling, backpacking, caving, and white water rafting.  “Trekkers” will spend most of their week in the Ohiopyle region of southwest Pennsylvania with adult leaders trained specifically to lead our Wilderness Adventure Treks.

ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE I | July 13 - July 20

ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE II | July 27-August 3
