My review of Cryotherapy

By Nicole Hickoff-Publisher Macaroni KID Williamsport September 29, 2022

Have you heard about Cryotherapy?

Did you know that there is a place right here in Muncy that offers this service?

Knead it or Not Massage & Body Works is located at 26 South Main Street in Muncy.  Amanda Fox is the owner and massage therapist!  She is FANTASTIC and knows what she is doing.  I have known Amanda since 2006.  After a hiatus in getting massages, I rediscovered her in 2022.  She now offers Cryotherapy.

**I was recently treated to a complimentary Cryotherapy session in exchange for my review and article.**

Cryotherapy

What is Cryotherapy?  Cryotherapy (cold therapy) is the process of lowering the skin temperature of the the body to -32 degrees Fahrenheit.  This is achieved by having cold air blown into a cabin that you enter for 3 minutes.  The temperature drops to -250 degrees Fahrenheit with the use of liquid nitrogen and you stand inside with your head and neck outside the cabin.  Cryotherapy isn't a medical treatment and doesn't need to be prescribed or referred by a doctor.  You can get benefits from one session, but it is most effective when used regularly.

Benefits of Cryotherapy

There are several benefits to Whole Body Cryotherapy.  The benefits include pain relief, increased blood circulation, increased collagen production, reduction of inflammation and swelling, increased energy, accelerated recovery time after workouts, and increased weight loss and caloric burn.

For the skin, collagen is increased.  Clients have reported that their skin feels tighter and looks younger.  The way this happens is when you enter the cold chamber, the cold triggers the brain to send collagen to protect the extremities while the blood stream focuses on the vitals.

Benefits also include helping with anxiety and depression.  The ultra-cold temperatures can cause physiological hormonal responses, which includes the release of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and endorphins.   This can have a positive effect on mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

Cryotherapy is also a great at helping relive migraines and arthritis.  The cold temperatures help to ease the pain of migraines and arthritis because the blood is being directed to other areas of the body.  This happens because the cold helps to bring the skin and muscle temperature down which helps pain and swelling.  Similar to applying an ice pack, but on a bigger scale.

Research is still needed to find out more on how whole body Cryotherapy could help with Dementia and Alzheimer's.  It’s theorized that Whole-Body Cryotherapy could help prevent Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. This may be an effective treatment because the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of cryotherapy could help combat the inflammatory and oxidative stress responses that occur with Alzheimer's.

As always, it is best to  consult your doctor before starting any treatment plan.  These are just some benefits that have been found to happen after whole body Cryotherapy.

My Review

**I was recently treated to a complimentary Cryotherapy session in exchange for my review and article.**

Like some people in this area, I had never heard of Cryotherapy and I was eager to try!  When I arrived Amanda had an intake form and release form for me to fill out.  Amanda goes over the intake form with you and develops a treatment plan.

After you fill out your forms and meet with Amanda to discuss your treatment plan, she has you get dressed for the Cryo Chamber.  She provides you with knee socks, special booties, a warm robe and heavy gloves.  Once you are dressed you head to the Cryo room.  Once in the room, Amanda turns the machine on and starts chilling the air inside the chamber to negative temperatures.  When the air in the chamber is chilled to -90 to -120 degrees, you step in and then take off your robe.  You are in the chamber for 90 seconds to 3 minutes.  I was able to stay in the chamber for 3 minutes for each of my sessions.

After each session I felt energized and the pain in my lower back was diminished.  My skin did feel tighter. Overall, I enjoyed my sessions and felt great.  I recommend giving Cryotherapy a try.  Be sure to discuss any health conditions with Amanda.  With anything you do there are risks involved.
