Fun Math Activities to Keep Kids from the Summer Slide

Have you heard of the Summer Slide?  Do you want to help your kids stay on track over the summer? 

Well, Macaroni Kid Williamsport teamed up with Lycoming College education students to give our readers some GREAT activities and games to keep kids learning and engaged over the summer!  

In case you haven’t heard of the summer slide, or want a quick refresher, it’s a term used to describe the learning regression that occurs over the summer months. When children are not in school every day practicing their reading or math skills, they tend to get a little rusty by the time they return to school in the fall. The activities below are designed to be fun and engaging ways to help your children keep their math skills sharp over the summer. 






Activity 1: Join/Add Hanger Activity

This activity was submitted by Hannah Lounsbury, a student in the Lycoming College Teacher Education Program.  The objective of this game is that students will be able to solve join/add word problems.


Activity 2: The Magic Addition Box

This activity was submitted by Allison Feinstein, a student in the Lycoming College Teacher Education Program.  The objective of this game is that the learner will find the sum of two numbers by using manipulatives and the Magic Addition Box.


Activity 3: Make 10 with Numbered Triangles 

This activity was submitted by Mackenzie Wright, a student in the Lycoming College Teacher Education Program.  The objective of this game is that students will find different combinations of two numbers to make 10.



Activity 4: Math Fishing

This activity was submitted by Morgan Christine, a student in the Lycoming College Teacher Education Program. The objective of this game is that the learner will be able to use basic addition skills to complete their fishing math problem that they made by catching the fish, and the learner will be able to use their fine motor skills to use the fishing rod to pick up a fish. 


Activity 5: Mathopoly

This activity was submitted by Christian Aurand, a student in the Lycoming College Teacher Education Program. The objective of this game is that the learners will practice their adding .and subtracting skills.


Activity 6: Number Line Hop Subtraction

This activity was submitted by Brock Jones, a student in the Lycoming College Teacher Education Program. The objective of this game is that the learner will be able to learn to subtract with the help of a number line.


Activity 7: Fact Fluency-Dice War

This activity was submitted by Teague Peace, a student in the Lycoming College Teacher Education Program.  The objective of this game is that the learner will be able to improve accuracy and speed when adding and subtracting single-digit numbers.
