17 Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day With Your Family

Our family is Irish, so it is no surprise that we love to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! Below are 17 ideas on how to make it a family fun holiday for your kids: 

  1. Wear Green. Make sure you have at least one piece of green clothing on (even if it's your socks!)
  2. Eat an Irish meal. Eat some delicious corned beef cabbage, the traditional stew, or soda bread. Locally owned Opa Robby's Market has great options if you don't want to make any. 
  3. Have a Shamrock Cookie Decorating Contest. Decorating cookies is not just for Christmas, and these can make a delicious dessert. Opa Robby's Market also happens to have some really fun cookie decorating kits for St. Patrick's Day.
  4. Find a 4 Leaf Clover. Go for a family walk and look for 4 leaf clovers. You'll be extra lucky if you find one with 5 leaves! 
  5. Make Green Slime. Making slime is easy and provides a ton of fun! All you need is 1/4tsp borax mixed with 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of glue mixed with 1/2 cup of water, and then mix the two together. Don't forget the green food coloring at the end. 
  6. Make a St. Patrick's Day Craft. Here are three fun crafts that are super easy to make. You can also search St. Patrick's Day crafts on Pinterest and find one that interests you. 
  7. Bake Something Green. You can cook green pancakes, green muffins, green eggs, the list goes on. 
  8. Watch a Holiday-Inspired Movie. Check out these family-friendly Irish movies.
  9. Listen to Irish Music. Listen to some Irish tunes found here
  10. Have an Irish Dance Party. Irish step dancing is a completely unique dance that you can learn from home! Check out this video here
  11. Read a St. Patrick's Day Book. Local bookstore Avid Bookshop has some great choices! You can also check out some books from your local library. 
  12. Learn Some Facts about St. Patrick's Day. This really informative YouTube video is a great watch. 
  13. Watch a Virtual Parade. NYC will have their annual St. Patrick's Day parade virtual this year. It's the oldest and largest parade in the world and has marched on the streets of NYC every year since 1762. 
  14. Attend a Virtual Event. The Bogart Library will have a fun virtual event- Irish Folktales and Food- on St. Patrick's Day streaming live to their Facebook page at 3 PM. 
  15. Plan a Scavenger Hunt. Look for gold around the house or even outside! Those little chocolate coins can be a great choice for this. You can also spray paint some rocks with gold paint.
