A twist on the classic burger!

Introducing a new burger creation

By Nicole Hickoff-Publisher Macaroni Kid Williamsport February 28, 2021

Burgers!  They are one of my favorite meals no matter the time of the year to cook;  they can be a simple meal to prepare or a culinary masterpiece.    Sometimes you can get tired of the same old burgers, so I decided to combine the classic burger with another favorite sandwich of mine the Ruben. Enter the ultimate combination of two delicious choices into one burger!  Introducing the Rube-a-Burger with a homemade Thousand Island Dressing. A delicious twist on two classic sandwiches!

Rube-a-Burger

Ingredients:

  • 4 premade burgers
  • 1 cup sauerkraut
  • 8 slices corned beef (2 per burger)
  • 8 slices baby swiss cheese (2 per burger)
  • 4 pretzel rolls
  • Thousand Island Dressing (see recipe)
  • Spices (garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, pepper, & salt)
  • Worcestershire Sauce

Directions:

  1. Preheat grill on medium to high heat.
  2. Prepare thousand island dressing (click for recipe).  Refrigerate till burgers are cooked.
  3. Open burgers and drizzle Worcestershire sauce over each.  Sprinkle spices on the burgers. Flip and repeat the step.  Let sit at room temperature till the grill is preheated.
  4. While the grill is preheating, heat a large pan over medium heat.  Spray with cooking spray and add the sauerkraut.  Warm-up till hot through and brown (about 10 minutes)
  5. Once the grill is preheated, place burgers on the grill.  Cook for 6-8 minutes per side.  Flip and grill for another 5 minutes.
  6. As the burgers are grilling, move sauerkraut to the side and place the corned beef slices in the pan.  Warm for about 5 minutes, turning halfway through.
  7. Place a slice of baby swiss on top of each burger.  Then, place corned beef and sauerkraut on top of the cheese.  Finally, place another slice of cheese on top of the sauerkraut/burger.  Close the lid and turn off the grill.  Let cheese melt (approximately 2 minutes).
  8. Remove burgers from the grill.  Place on pretzel rolls.  Then top burgers with a spoonful of thousand island dressing.
  9. Serve with homemade curly fries or fresh-cut fries.

Recipe notes:

You can save your sauerkraut from the holidays and freeze.  Then get out and defrost.

Don't want to make your own thousand island dressing, just use the store-bought dressing.

Any rolls will work, pretzel rolls just have a sweeter taste and really seals the deal with the burgers.

Get corned beef from the deli, sliced thin.
