West Branch Goes Above and Beyond with Elementary Play

The full-scale production of Grace Lin’s "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" happens this weekend

March 13, 2018

Tell me about the play. What's it about?
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is an adaptation of a book by Grace Lin. Grace Lin is a prolific author and illustrator of children's books that celebrate Chinese heritage and culture. This Newberry Honor book tells the magical adventure of a young girl named Minli, who journeys through China in search of her family's fortune. Along the way, she meets many characters from Chinese folklore and learns the value of friendship and courage, and where true happiness is found.

You sound very proud of your students. What are some unique things they are doing to make this production go above and beyond?

Theatre naturally brings the students together to work as a team. We are very proud of the way our students have helped each other, persevered through difficulties, and invested their creative energy into this production. This year our students have helped to build and paint most of the hand props they will use during the play. We also have some of our oldest students in leadership positions such as assistant director and props master. Throughout the past several months, we have studied Chinese culture and art together, including Chinese ink brush painting and shadow puppetry. Putting this production together doesn’t just involve acting, but studying history, art, culture, and working together as a team.

Any obstacles with getting the play to come together? How did you all overcome them?

It is a huge effort by our entire community to make this play a success. Many parents sacrificed countless hours to advertise for the play, recruit businesses to sponsor the play, make costumes, do makeup, find props, and many other tasks. Our play does not just require a team effort from the students and teachers, but the entire community. We could never make our play a success each year without the diligent help of our parents, teachers, and students working together.

What things have you heard from the students and teachers about being in the play?

One of the biggest benefits of having students perform a play is an incredible boost in their self-confidence. Successfully memorizing lines, acting as another character, keeping track of entrances and exits, handling their costumes and props independently, and performing at a professional theatre in front of a live audience are all factors that help the students see how much they are capable of.
